Moving on with my quest to read them all in order, and now nearly through The Big Four. Definitely NOT one of Dame Agatha's better efforts, but it's part of the oeuvre and must be read. Noteworthy is the appearance of another of her slang ethnic pejoratives, in this case "chink". So far, in previous novels we've encountered "dago", "nigger" and "kaffir", and I think a few others that I cannot recall at this moment. Interesting, if sad, that at the time she wrote and published, such disrespectful and ignorant words could freely be bandied about in conversation by civilized and genteel people, and accepted by her publisher and readers. In that regard, time has improved things somewhat.
